From Hospitality to Residential Drafting: A Real Career Change

If you’re considering a career change into building design or looking for a flexible way to study drafting online, Tim Dillon’s story is a powerful example of what’s possible. As a recent graduate of the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting at Built Form Design Academy (BFDA), Tim transitioned from running a boutique country hotel to preparing for a new career in residential design.

This BFDA student story highlights how online study can support regional learners, mature-age students, and anyone ready to take a new professional direction.

From Hospitality to Residential Drafting: A Real Career Change

Before studying with BFDA, Tim spent more than ten years managing a boutique hotel in NSW, after first training as a baker. His career path was far from construction or design, but renovating the hotel sparked a new interest.

His journey reflects a growing group of students who come from diverse industries and discover drafting as a career opportunity.

Why Online Drafting Study Worked for a Regional Student

One of the main reasons Tim chose BFDA was the ability to study drafting online from regional NSW while managing a demanding job.

For many students living outside major cities, traditional classroom learning simply isn’t practical. Tim’s experience highlights the value of:

These benefits make online drafting courses an ideal pathway for learners juggling multiple commitments.

Building Skills and Software Confidence

Through the course, Tim developed strong skills using ArchiCAD and gained confidence to start applying for drafting roles. He also learned how industry networking through groups such as the BDAA (Building Designers Association) can support job opportunities, especially for those new to the sector.

His next step is preparing a portfolio and relocating and then will begin looking for residential drafting positions.

A Student Story for Anyone Considering a Change

Tim’s experience shows that:

Most importantly, Tim has generously agreed to share his journey publicly, encouraging others to choose their own path.
