Dale Smith: Driving Change and Opportunity at BFDA

At Built Form Design Academy (BFDA), we believe that great design education starts with the people behind it. One of those people is Dale Smith, our Chief Operating Officer, a strategic thinker, seasoned project manager, and advocate for opportunity in vocational education.

Dale’s journey into education leadership is anything but typical, and that’s what makes it so inspiring.

Originally a civil and structural engineer, Dale graduated with honours from the University of Wollongong. He went on to work across the construction and infrastructure sectors, managing multi-million dollar hospital redevelopments, solar energy installations, and large-scale engineering projects. But his ability to lead complex initiatives didn’t stop there. With a Master of Business Administration from Macquarie Graduate School of Management, Dale moved into roles that demanded both big-picture vision and hands-on problem-solving.

Before joining BFDA, Dale held senior positions where he was responsible for everything from dispute resolution on $100M contracts to business case development for the Department of Education. He even co-founded and ran his own architecture and engineering firm, with Teresa Serrao, showing his entrepreneurial flair and long-standing commitment to design.

Educational Leadership at Built Form Design Academy

Since becoming COO at BFDA, Dale has led some of our most impactful transformations. He guided the rollout of our new qualifications, transitioned students to a fresh Learning Management System, and played a crucial role in securing government funding under Smart and Skilled in NSW and Job Trainer/User Choice in Tasmania. For a school that’s only eight years old, these achievements are nothing short of game-changing.

Dale is passionate about making design education accessible and aligned with the real needs of the building industry. He’s proud to support students, especially those pivoting careers or stepping up from the tools, in gaining nationally recognised qualifications that open doors.

Whether you’re studying a Certificate IV in Residential Drafting or a Diploma of Building Design, Dale’s work ensures your experience is grounded in industry relevance, strong support, and future-focused opportunity.

At BFDA, we don’t just teach building design, we build futures. And with leaders like Dale, that future looks bright.
