When Nick Pham arrived in Australia in December 2019, he brought with him an impressive background in architecture. Originally from Vietnam, Nick had spent years working as a project architect on major healthcare and high-rise developments. He had also completed a master’s degree in Germany. But like many skilled professionals migrating to Australia, he quickly discovered that local qualifications were essential to move forward in his career.
“In Australia, everyone wants to see qualifications,” Nick says. “Even if you’ve got years of experience, it still matters here.”
Nick knew he didn’t want to start from scratch, and thanks to BFDA, he didn’t have to.
Finding the Right Pathway
After arriving in Queensland, Nick began looking into Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) as a way to have his experience formally recognised. He explored a number of providers, including TAFE Queensland, but found the process frustrating and slow.
“TAFE offered RPL, but it took weeks just to hear back about simple enquiries,” he recalls. “BFDA stood out because the process was clear and efficient. Everything was structured, and I knew exactly what I had to do.”
Nick went on to complete both the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting and the Diploma of Building Design through BFDA’s RPL program — a streamlined pathway that allowed him to meet licensing requirements and begin working in the industry quickly.
From Qualification to Licensure — and Business Ownership
With both qualifications under his belt, Nick gained valuable local experience working for architectural studios and builders across Queensland. He steadily built his portfolio, worked on high-end custom homes and commercial projects, and eventually made the leap into starting his own company.
Today, he runs a boutique building design studio, is fully licensed with the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC), and delivers projects across multiple states. His team of three works on everything from residential renovations to retail spaces and multi-storey buildings up to four storeys.
“I’ve had my own company for two years now,” Nick says. “We work with both builders and private clients, and I’ve even completed interstate projects in Sydney and Tasmania.”
One of his most memorable projects to date? A full building design for the Saigon Art Gallery in Hobart, a Vietnamese art space showcasing traditional lacquer paintings.
Why RPL Made the Difference
For Nick, completing both qualifications through RPL was a turning point — not just in getting licensed, but in taking control of his career.
“RPL helped me fast-track everything,” he says. “I was able to get qualified, get licensed, and start my own business — all within five years of arriving in Australia.”
Nick’s story is a powerful reminder that for skilled professionals — whether trained overseas or already working in the industry — RPL can be the key to unlocking meaningful, long-term success.
